In this episode of the Grantee Spotlight series, we focus on an important project that has significant implications for smart contract adoption. Clause is a platform for digitizing and automating legal agreements by connecting them to markets, sensors, payments, accounting records, enterprise software systems, and blockchain networks like Tezos. Clause enables the negotiation and execution of legal contracts that can be monitored in real time.
“Without the legal contract and the smart contract essentially being on par with each other, you can have operations that are enabled with the blockchain, but not legally enforceable.” – Houman Shadab
With this grant from the Tezos Foundation, the Clause team will develop an Ergo to Michelson compiler to enable a smart legal contract layer on Tezos. Ergo is a domain-specific language that captures the execution logic of legal contracts, and Michelson is a language used to write smart contracts on Tezos. This technology will enable Tezos to support commercial transactions and practices that are legally enforceable.
